PLR License Concerns

Beware of PLR Digital Products Licenses: Knowing what you can and cannot do

PLR Digital Products have gained a lot of popularity in recent years, and for good reason. They’re a great way to start or grow your online business without having to invest hours, days, or weeks creating products. The growing popularity has also resulted in a flood of PLR Digital Product sellers, which sounds great in that you can find more options however, before you stock up on PLR for your shop, let’s take a look at a few things to beware of:

1. LIMITED USE

Some PLR licenses will limit the number of times you’re allowed to sell the files, especially if it was a free PLR product. Like this license here:

2. MEMBERSHIPS

A membership that gives you ongoing access to new PLR Digital Products can be a great opportunity to keep growing your business and adding fresh products regularly. But we’ve found a few that revoke your license if you cancel your membership.

This one is a pretty slimy catch, and in most cases, unenforceable! Most PLR requires you to modify the product before you list and sell it, once you've made those modifications, you can reasonably argue that it's now your work. If you dig hard enough, you can find more info about how to claim it as your own once you've modified it. (I'll come back & post some links when I have a chance!)

3. THREATS

As crazy as it sounds, yes, many PLR licenses include threats of legal action if you do not adhere to their rules as they interpret them. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to work with any business that feels its necessary to threaten me with legal action. We’re business owners too, or aspiring business owners, we don’t need partners that treat us like children. The thing that really gets me is that they’ll market it in a way that makes it seem like they want us to succeed in selling digital products, but language and threats like these seem to indicate the opposite.

4. RULES ON HOW YOU CAN SELL

Every PLR license that we’ve seen so far dictates how you can sell the digital files, what your customer is allowed to do, and the file type that you’re allowed to sell.

For example, you’re only allowed to sell the PLR as a PDF, PNG, or JPEG file. In other words, you may not sell the raw files to your customers. This means that you’re not allowed to give your customers a file that they can edit. But being able to edit is a staple of digital file buying. No matter what the product is, customers want to be able to edit it, personalize it, and make it their own. Not being able to give them that option could be a major turn-off to potential customers.

5. CANNOT GIVEAWAY FOR FREE

Some PLR providers will not allow you to give away the products because they don’t want the “value to be reduced”. While this concern is understandable to some extent, it’s also unreasonable. Using digital products as lead magnets or giveaways is very common and each buyer is going to have their own use and customer base, so the person that wants to give it away may not be marketing to the same people as the person that is reselling it. With the required modifications, there’s no reason to believe that the people giving it away are going to make it impossible for the resellers.

While it’s easy enough to find PLR Digital Product providers, it may prove difficult to find providers that offer unique, high-quality products with a reasonable license, but you shouldn’t have to settle for products with so many restrictions that it limits your growth opportunities.

When I decided to convert my Digital Products for Private Label Resell Rights, my top priority was offering products that you can’t get anywhere else and an unbeatable license that is supportive of your business goals. You can buy individual products or join the membership where you have access to the full library plus new products, and we now offer a complete Digital Product business outline, complete with niche so all you have to do is start selling, without a strict license!
